Child Noncompliance and Defiance
 

Does your child do any of the following: yell, steal, whine, lie, fail to complete routine chores, destroy property, argue, annoy/humiliate, ignore requests, tantrum, talk back, swear, etc.?

Ages:  4 –11 year-olds

Goals: 

  • improve parental management skills and competence in dealing with child behavior problems, particularly noncompliant or defiant behavior
  • increase parental knowledge of the causes of childhood defiant behavior and the principles and concepts underlying the social learning of such behavior
  • improve child compliance with commands, directives, and rules given by the parents
  • increase family harmony through the following: improvement of parental use of positive attention and other consequences with their children; provision of clear guidance, rules, and instruction to those children; and application of swift, fair, and just discipline for inappropriate child behavior

Groups will meet 90 minutes for 9 weeks and will cover the following topics:

  • Why Children Misbehave
  • Pay Attention!
  • Increasing Compliance and Independent Play
  • When Praise is Not Enough
  • Time Out and Other Disciplinary Methods
  • Extending Time Out to Other Misbehavior
  • Anticipating Problems: Managing Children in Public Places
  • Improving School Performance from Home
  • Handling Future Behavior Problems

 

There will be a booster session and follow-up meetings.
