College Advisement

college advisement

The college admissions process is a nerve-racking experience for most.  It can be particularly difficult to find admission to the school that best fits the needs of adolescents with learning difficulties.   Our College Admissions Specialist, Janet Ronkin, believes that college planning should begin in the 8th grade and continue through graduate school. She is an expert in how the process works, including course selection, when and how to take the SAT and ACT, how to prepare for tests, and everything else it takes to be admitted into increasingly competitive schools. She believes that students should apply to a wide range of colleges and that they should be challenged to succeed. Her hands-on approach diminishes the anxiety experienced by students and their families. Additionally, she is well-versed on the educational support available on most of the major college and university campuses, as well as scholarships and opportunities for summer programs.

The sooner a student understands the entire process, the more experience he or she has with the various tests, and the more preparation he or she seeks, the more successful he or she will be.  College admission counseling includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Evaluation of which tests to take and when
  • How to best prepare for the tests
  • Which universities to apply to
  • Hands-on assistance in the preparation of the activity list, essays and applications

Because students face varying levels of academic difficulty, we have two professionals available to assist in meeting the needs of each student most appropriately.  Janet Ronkin, our “in house” specialist, is available to help students who range from advanced performance to those with mild learning challenges. For more complex cases, we refer to professionals in the community who specialize in helping students with severe impediments to learning in order to ensure that they receive appropriate placement and services in the college setting.
