Defiant Teens
 

Does your teen do any of the following: yell, steal, lie, fail to complete routine chores, destroy property, argue, annoy/humiliate, ignore requests, tantrum, talk back, swear, etc.?

Ages: 12-17 year-olds

Goals:

  • Improve parental management skills and competence in dealing with teen behavior problems, particularly noncompliant or defiant behavior
  • Increase parental knowledge of the causes of defiant behavior in adolescents and the principles and concepts underlying the social learning of such behavior
  • Improve teen cooperation with parental requests, directives, and rules
  • Increase family harmony
  • Increase both parental and teen use of problem-solving skills and positive communication styles during problem-focused discussions and interactions that involve the teen
  • Alter the teen’s or the parents’ unreasonable beliefs

Groups will meet 90 minutes for 9 weeks and will cover the following topics:

  • Discussion of ADHD and ODD
  • Principles of Behavior Management
  • Developing Positive Attention
  • Developing Parental Attending Skills
  • Establishing a Behavioral Contract
  • Using Response Cost
  • Grounding
  • School Advocacy
  • Problem-Solving Communication Training
  • Dealing with Unreasonable Beliefs and Expectations

There will be a booster session and follow-up meetings.
